Monday Made it! Play Dough Edition

I am so excited to be linking up with 4th Grade Folics for my first ever Monday Made it!!!! I've been on holidays for the last couple of weeks, and we spent a week at the my parent's cottage. The weather was awful it was rainy and cold. The cottage is about a half hour drive to the closest to town, so going into town to pick something up is not always realistic.

After three days being stuck inside my mom and I decided that we need to do something with my girls. We decided to make some play dough. We hunted online for a no cook play dough recipe, but realized that we had a problem. No food colouring!!!!! I don't know about your kids, but my girls definitely prefer coloured play dough. So this was a problem. We hunted and hunted for alternatives and of course we didn't have anything!!!!

My mom had the brilliant idea to use grated crayon to colour the play dough. At first I thought she was a little crazy. I figured that the play dough would feel funny, but we decided to give it a try.

We started by using an old grater that we had lying around the cottage. We grated the crayon.

We then mixed it into the playdough. It really didn't seem to be working.
So I decided that we need to melt the crayon and then add it in. However, here is the problem. to get the crayon to melt it needs to be really hot. While it's still hot it needs to be mixed into the play dough. OUCH!! But then it cooled off so quickly that it was hard to mix it in with the play dough.

This is what we found out works the best.
Use the big fat thick crayons. They are much easier to grate and you don't have to watch out for your fingers as much. One large crayon is enough to colour one ball of play dough.

Once you have grated the crayon add the crayon to tablespoon of oil. We used coconut oil, put I imagine

Next, you have to mix and mix it. Eventually it will give you a beautiful colour.

My girls loved helping mixing the grated crayon into the play dough.

The play dough turned out great! Look at the colour!

But it's even more fun playing with them.

Don't forget to check out what everyone else has been up to this week!
